How much stranger is Sharron Angle going to get?  Judging by her latest quote, we could be in for a very bizarre next two months.

“I know people are very frightened about what’s going on in this country,” Angle said in an interview that originally aired on April 21 with TruNews Christian Radio’s Rick Wile. “And these programs that you mentioned — that Obama has going with Reid and Pelosi pushing them forward — are all entitlement programs built to make government our God. And that’s really what’s happening in this country is a violation of the First Commandment. We have become a country entrenched in idolatry, and that idolatry is the dependency upon our government. We’re supposed to depend upon God for our protection and our provision and for our daily bread, not for our government. And you’ve just identified the real crux of the problem.”

President Obama was in my city Atlanta Monday to deliver a speech to the Disabled American Veterans. The speech detailed the end of combat missions in Iraq. What struck me most was not the speech itself–the writing has been on the walls for months regarding the cessation of hostilities in Iraq–it was the scurrying of one high profile democrat into the cracks. Democrat Roy Barnes–who happens to be running for another term as governor of the state–was hundreds of miles away at an already scheduled appointment.   The timing is very odd.

It’s totally possible Barnes didn’t want to breathe in the perceived toxic fumes the president is giving off right now.  Especially in a state like Georgia, where most democrats don’t seem to have the stones to stand up for policies they trumpeted during the campaign of 2008. And it wouldn’t be the first time a democrat running for governor ducked the president.

Hold Obama accountable for the bureaucratic neglect that enabled the Gulf disaster. Liberals won’t get anywhere by meekly accepting every compromise that comes down the pike or looking the other way when Democrats screw up. Politics goes is a two-way street and liberals need their leaders to lead sometimes.But if the left is going to demand action, it has to do more than sigh when action–even modest action–actually happens. The left has to show some enthusiasm, if not locally then at least nationally. [...] Otherwise office-holders, even ones from relatively liberal districts, won’t have much incentive to vote liberal next time around.

Precisely.  Given the scope and enormity of the administration’s agenda–and the fact that most of it has been implemented in an 18 month span–you would think progressives would be enthusiastic about the possibilities in the next 30 months.  Progressives are doing themselves an injustice by showing very little enthusiasm for what this congress and this administration has done.  Is there any wonder why the conservative base enjoys a huge enthusiasm imbalance with their liberal counterparts?

Liberals have to awaken to the political realities surrounding this administration.  If President Obama seems to govern from the center- left– its because the realities of this bitter partisan environment call for it– and it is a necessity in order to achieve the policy successes every liberal was so ecstatic about during his campaign.  To rebel against that approach does nothing for progressive solidarity.  As Cesca points out, this type of disconnect just might cost liberals terribly this fall.

Multicultural scholar and bloated redneck Jake Knotts–when he’s not disparaging Nikki Haley, the presumptive Republican nominee for governor in South Carolina– posits  literate queries like these regarding Haley’s religion:

“have you ever asked her if she believes in Jesus Christ as her lord and savior and that he died on the cross for her sins? Have you ever asked her that?”

Well I’ve never asked her.  But then again, why would any good Christian deign to ask a “raghead“ about the deity they worship?  Knotts is doing his damndest to perpetuate South Carolina’s circle of madness.  I can’t wait to see new senator Alvin Greene sworn in.  I’m sure he’ll immediately be videotaped running around the ellipse, with his pants around his ankles looking for young interns.  South Carolina is comedy gold.

Anyway, back to my initial thought.  Does the constitution implicitly state that you must be Christian to serve the people?  Unless I’m completely wrong, it does not.  What would prevent Nikki Haley–if she were Muslim, or Buddhist, or Sikh, or Methodist–from serving the people of South Carolina with clarity, honor, and distinction?  Some of these so-called Christians sure are intolerant and short-sighted.

Tuesday’s biggest primary night of the year saw relatively few surprises.  Women–especially GOP women–stood tall, with the likes of Blanche Lincoln, Nikki Haley, Sharron Angle, Carly Fiorina, and Meg Whitman all prevailing in their primary challenges.  One of the most shocking developments taking place Tuesday happened in South Carolina (surprise).  The winner of the Democratic primary for the senate was a man named Alvin Greene.

In the year of voter angst and incumbent backlash, Alvin Greene–a 32 year old unemployed veteran– managed to do the impossible.  Mr Greene defied the party apparatus by never appearing at any Democratic function.  He did not campaign.  He has no college degree.  He has no name recognition, and no political support.  And to make matters worse, Mr. Greene has a felony obscenity charge.  Yet voters still saw fit to choose this man as Senator Jim Demint’s challenger in November.  How does this happen?

Putting everything you know about politics, and the political structure aside,  look at Mr. Greene through the eyes of the new disaffected American voter.  On its face, the curious case of Alvin Greene is Rocky Balboa–the American underdog who challenges conventional wisdom, and rises above obstacles to achieve success.  What could be more appealing to the Tea Party crowd, than an unemployed man turning the status quo on its head?  Greene did not accept a penny from lobbyists, and did not shill for companies desperate for a foothold in the political process.

Taking an even closer look at this race reveals a more astonishing fact:  According to the Center For Responsive Politics, the spending in congressional  elections will cost 4 billion dollars in the 2010 cycle.  That is an astronomical sum, almost unfathomable to the average civic-minded citizen.  Alvin Greene seemingly infiltrated the rich folks club, completely re-wiring the circuits of big-time elections.  So who is Alvin Greene?

If one were to think skeptically, given the previously mentioned obstacles in his way, you might surmise that Mr. Greene is a plant.  You may think he’s an empty vassal, propped up and supported by Republicans in an effort to severely hamper Democratic chances in the general election.  It’s an outrageous claim, but not out of the realm of possibility.  How did Greene afford the $10,400 filing fee to get on the ballot?  That’s a ton of money for your average working man, and he’s not even working!

But it’s almost too easy to paint this as Republican shenanigans.  It’s also too easy to trace the money of such a straw man conspiracy– and if nothing else– the Republican party is too smart to engage in such a scam in today’s political climate.

So who is Alvin Greene?  Maybe he’s the personification of voter outrage with the status quo.  Maybe this is the strongest indication yet of average American citizens disgusted by the taint of money, and the strain of gridlock in politics.  Meet  Alvin Greene, the face of voter disgust.

I realize I’m a bit late to the game on this–and after last week’s primaries in Alabama, Les Philip is now an insignificant footnote–I still have to post this utterly amazing piece of crap ad.

How did that work out for you Mr. Philip?

Madison County Commissioner Mo Brooks had 51 percent of the vote to Griffith’s 33 percent and 16 percent for Les Phillip with 99 percent of precincts reporting. Although the Associated Press had not called the race, local media reported that Griffith had conceded the contest to Brooks.

Since when is it patriotic to call the president of the United States a traitor?  It wasn’t when George W was in office, and it’s not now.  See, some of these folks are equating patriotism with flame-throwing, bigoted, divisive rhetoric.  As long as you’re draped in the stars and stripes, then you can lob a few misplaced grenades into the tents of those socialist softy liberals–who can’t possibly love the military because they don’t want to spend all our money on war.

I don’t condemn Les Philip’s views.  I condemn his opportunistic, self-important arrogance.  I condemn his racial posturing– as if posing as Obama’s antithesis conservative black man– unafraid to call out Obama’s racism because he’s black was virtuous.  All Philip has done is clone himself in Sarah Palin paleo-conservative skin.  In fact,  his cynicism and utter shamelessness lend themselves quite naturally to Palin and her camp.  At least now we know what the future holds for “anti-Obama.”  Have fun ice fishing in Wasilla Les.

Here are the results of primary night in America:

• Rep. Joe Sestak wins the Senate Democratic primary in Pennsylvania against Republican-turned-Democrat incumbent Senator Arlen Specter.
• Democrats Sen. Blanche Lincoln (44%) & Lt. Gov. Bill Halter (43%) will go to primary runoff.
• Democrat Mark Critz wins race against Republican Tim Burns in a special election in Pennsylvania to fill the seat of the late Rep. John Murtha.
• Tea Party Candidate Rand Paul defeats Republican establishment opponent Secretary of State Trey Grayson (Mitch McConnell’s candidate) in Kentucky GOP Senate primary.

So, what do we know?  We know that activists may just have some clout to affect change in the fall, as tea party candidate Rand Paul charged to victory against Trey Grayson.  Similarly, Grayson–who was the darling favorite of minority leader Mitch McConnell and former vice president Dick Cheney–illustrates the relative fragility the republican establishment is under.

For democrats, Arlen Spector’s defeat may foreshadow the trouble some candidates may have touting the support of President Obama.  Not only did it not change the political compass of the electorate in Pennsylvania– it may have caused an unintentional backlash from those strongly rejecting some of his policies.  As a result, his more than 30 years of public service came to an end.

The most telling election last night was neither Spector’s loss or Paul’s victory–as both were practically forecast for weeks.  It was the special election in Pennsylvania for the late John Murtha’s congressional seat.  Republicans had hoped to use this seat as the barometer of the national mood–effectively dealing a blow to democrats in a district where Barack Obama’s approval rating is 35%.  This was the only contest last night that was head to head– democrat versus republican. 

The democrat prevailed comfortably, dealing a blow to republican hopes of a new republican revolution.  That wave of republican dominance narrative thrust down all of our throats for months, may not be as significant as first imagined.

Last night’s results are indicative of the anti-incumbent mania gripping the country.  No longer are incumbents safe hiding under their prodigious trappings of power.  Beware of the anti-establishment vote.
