Digby breaks it down:
I guess it just doesn’t occur to these people that any discussions of “owning” an African American civil rights icon are, by definition, offensive. To then derisively tell blacks that they don’t own him and then in the next breath say they have gotten “lazy” and distorted his ideas is so obviously outrageous that I have to think they are being purposefully obtuse. This isn’t political incorrectness, it’s just plain old crude stupidity.
Mr. Beck’s been taking some heat for bastardizing the civil rights movement for his own shallow purposes. In one of his most recent moments of clarity, Beck championed a bigoted, anti-civil rights advocate, who essentially called Dr. King a communist. So by using Beck’s own circular logic, Glenn Beck thinks Martin Luther King was a communist. Beck is so smug in his own petulant arrogance, he fails to comprehend the true sacrifices Dr. King and other pioneers–black and white– made for all Americans. Sacrifices made so Beck could have the freedom to drink himself into oblivion, and cry incessantly on his television show professing to understand the civil rights struggle.
Beck is a charlatan, proudly exploiting the flavor of the month issue for monetary gain. In this country that’s called capitalism, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But Beck needs to own egotism and stupidity, and stop riding the wave of a man a hundred times better than he’ll ever be.
