Jesse Farmer, The Co-Founder Of Facebook, Speaks About The Obama Controversy

September 30th, 2009 · No Comments · Democracy, News, Political Fringe, Politics

From Politico:

“To some extent, this is a fact of life on the Internet,” Jesse Farmer, the co-founder of a tech startup, told POLITICO. “There is definitely this culture of paranoia and fear and I think both sides are reacting in extreme ways.”

“Obviously, people carrying guns to town hall meetings, that’s scary,” he continued. “People losing their cool over an Internet poll like this, that doesn’t calm the situation.”

Farmer, who noted that the poll had been taken down quickly after the menacing content was flagged, said he planned to improve his system for responding to offensive polls posted by users.

“I didn’t catch the poll early enough. That’s my problem and Facebook’s problem, too,” Farmer said. “I can’t say I can make sure this will never happen again. I can say I have algorithms and automated systems in place to deal with this stuff.”

The controversial survey was posted on the networking site Facebook over the weekend. It was taken down on Monday and the Secret Service announced that it had opened an investigation into the poll.

Farmer, who supported Obama’s campaign for president, said the Secret Service had interviewed him about the survey in a “friendly” conversation.
