Think Tanks Do More Tanking Than Thinking

December 4th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Democracy, Political Fringe, Politics, Republicans, america

It’s so easy to belittle decisions made after the fact.  Take the 700 plus billion dollar bailout, which at the time, received universal support.  It was seen as a necessary implement in propping up huge financial institutions — before they collapsed– and resulted in widespread economic turmoil.

Now, every clown hidden amongst tea party crowds, protected under their cloak of financial responsibility, decries this as big government run amok.  Even the clowns who supported it (John McCain, Sarah Palin).  To quote Wonkabout: “Contemplating large expenditures after they’ve been implemented — it’s the American way.”

Political think tanks– that bastion of elitist eggheads in love with the smell of own their gaseous eruptions– are as responsible as any two-bit, two-faced politician for propagating lies and bitter derision.  Case in point.  Here’s an exchange from Thursday’s panel discussion of climate change at the way conservativeve Heritage Foundation.  Senator James Inhofe drops by to ratchet up the wacky factor just a tad:

Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) paid a surprise visit to the Heritage Foundation Thursday, dropping in for a panel discussion on his favorite subject: climate change. The Senate’s most virulent global warming denier, Inhofe was greeted with cheers of “our hero!” at the conservative think tank. After launching in to his usual spiel about climate change as the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people, Inhofe went on to criticize President Obama’s decision to address the upcoming climate treaty negotiations in Copenhagen next week. He said he thought the Europeans must believe Obama is some sort of king they way they are gushing over his promise to commit the U.S. to reducing greenhouse gasses. “You would be shocked about how dumb some of these guys over there are,” he said.

Wild cheers and chants??  At a think tank???  The Euro bashing is also a sophisticated touch.  And if you consider that these people are supposedly some of the brightest policy scholars on the right– you can understand the contempt your everyday, brain-dead conservative feels toward our European counterparts.

I’m hoping the Heritage Foundation is engaging in actual, productive policy work, instead of whooping it up with the nutrolls of the GOP.
