Will Sonia Sotomayor make American history?

POLITICS-US-USA-COURT-NOMINEE

Today beginning at 10 am Eastern time, Judge Sonia Sotomayor will appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee in  her quest to become the first Hispanic-American to ever serve on the Supreme Court of the United States.  It is a momentous occasion to be sure, but she may have to face forceful resistance.  These confirmation hearings can be known for their sound and fury, but they often signify nothing more than bark and bluster.  I’m by no means brushing aside their importance,  I’m merely stating the obvious.  When the party in the white house nominates a candidate for the high court, and they possess majorities in both houses of the congress, it is rare that that candidate isn’t confirmed.  So unless judge Sotomayor’s past includes masterminding a serial murder spree, she should be confirm as our nation’s 111th supreme court justice, and only the 3rd woman ever to serve.

I will be following the hearings through a live chat with the Associated Press and Ron Fournier on twitter.  I’ll be providing updates on twitter @wordsnourishme and on the blog.  It should be fun.
