This has been shown before obviously, but I think it illustrates an interesting dichotomy in today’s republican party.

Reagan may have been talking about private sector unions, but the ideals he trumpeted here– the need to bargain collectively being intertwined with freedom is universal–and it epitomizes American principles.

For all of the professed love and adulation given to President Reagan by conservatives today, neither Reagan nor today’s conservatives remotely resemble one another politically. Would the former even be moderately popular in today’s republican party?

Would they consider his brand of conservatism their own? No. Therein lies the tragic hypocrisy; This new brand of scorched earth conservatism is less about pragmatic ideology and application– and more about derisive scorn, social wedge issues, and burn down the village to save the hut political expediency.

This isn’t a choice between one form of political ideology over another–it’s a choice between sanity and recklessness. The reckless seem to have the ear of the masses.

Let’s just call it what it is: idiocy, lunacy, and buffoonery have become triple components of an ideological doctrine that is passing for earnest debate in conservative GOP circles. More and more have proven this beyond a shadow of a doubt.

It’s nice to know so many of them have become knowledgeable about Kenyan world views. What is this exactly, and why are conservatives so eager to ascribe it to the president? Of all manner of insults and illogical barbs you could level at President Obama, a Kenyan world view is not one of them–especially when you don’t really know what it means (Huckabee). Let’s delve a bit deeper here; President Obama’s political ideology is not borne of some science fiction project–nor is it culled from the African fields of pseudo-socialism. This president’s views are shaped by neo progressive ideas and pragmatic centrism– a most American thread of ideology.

Frankly, the ascription given him by fake conservatives is beyond bizarre– but this fits the pattern of false ideological dogma– tripping up conservatives since 2008. Initially, he was the novice–the community organizer who dwelled within a prison of academia–unable to engage with real America because of his intellectual bonafides. Whatever happened to that theory? At least it portended of some semblance of political difference. It tried to serve as some type of warning about his lack of experience. The path these individuals have now decided to take is more sinister, more dangerous.

While the whiffs of Obama as “one of them” has been wafting around for some time, the rancorous theme has spread like wildfire in the last year–and it has been propped up appreciably by more and more recognizable conservative mouth pieces. Mike Huckabee’s mangling of Barack Obama’s you conflates the notion of Obama as the outsider–and Obama as the African enemy of democracy. Conservatives need to believe this. They need to make it their reality, in order to advance their own distorted reality. It’s paramount to their degenerative thesis on disproving this President’s effectiveness by delegitimizing his very Americaness.

But where is this strategy leading them? The shrapnel of kookiness threatens to damage innocent bystanders vying to challenge the president next year. That is the irony of it all: In their attempt to retake the White House, this type of delusional demagoguery practice by some aspiring candidates is poisoning the waters–whether they deem it so or not. Coates puts it best here:

But again facts don’t really matter here. This is a strict ideology built on an alternate reality. You can’t reason with people who not only believe their president is Kenyan, but need to believe he’s Kenyan. The belief comes first. The casus belli of white populism is resentment of those not like us. Facts are mere materiel meant to be invented, discarded, smelted and recast in service of the cause.

When facts are created to prop up your reality, what use is there to debate anything–if that indeed is their true intent. Where are the real grown-ups here? Perhaps they’ll show their faces during the president’s second inauguration.

Thomas Jefferson speaks about the Constitution and its malleability in 1816:

“Some men look at constitutions with sanctimonious reverence, and deem them like the arc of the covenant, too sacred to be touched; who ascribe to the men of the preceding age a wisdom more than human, and suppose what they did to be beyond amendment. Let us follow no such examples, nor weakly believe that one generation is not as capable as another of taking care of itself, and of ordering its own affairs. Each generation is as independent as the one preceding, as that was of all which had gone before.”

This is Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), supposed Constitutional scholar ( much like all conservatvies–at least that’s what they claim) preaching about the merits of upholding the Constitution:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Whether you agree with Jefferson’s assertion or not, a very clear case could be made for its relevance then, and its relevance now.

What I find intriguing is the level of duplicitousness on the part of some of these constitutional sycophants such as Goodlatte. There’s something very odd about the fact that those preaching strict constitutional adherence, seem to be woefully ignorant of exactly what’s in the constitution. Maybe that’s why the aforementioned quote by Jefferson is so resoundingly timely.

This 112th congress is already off to a great start.

This is my front-runner for quote of the year… and it’s only January 5th:

This is a man who I don’t believe has any faith in America as it is, and who thinks our only redeeming feature is that we can elect people like him to change us to what he thinks we ought to be. And I think this is part of that. Dinesh D’Sousza has argued that he really has sort of a Third World mentality of envy and resentment of the United States, my feeling is very much the same that this is not a man who loves his country, not a man who is dedicated to his values. And it’s incredible to me that the American people could have elected such a man to the high office he has, which means he holds really our lives in his hands, not only without knowing what he was like and his track record but disregarding what they do know about his past in order to invest him what they imagined to be his good qualities.

Indeed. I’ve already shot down D’souza’s intellectually bankrupt (putting it mildly) book. Thomas Sowell is another matter entirely. Sowell is doomed to perpetuate this asinine pattern of belief–believing fervently in an ideology he knows to be untrue, because he is so stuck in his grave of ignorance, he cannot dig himself out. This is what blogger Fred Clark describes as “bearing false witness against one’s neighbor.”

When confused neoconservatives such as Sowell continue to push this narrative, they reinforce their own fantasy world. It’s a world where Barack Obama is the anti-Christ– determined to eat the souls of right-thinking Americans– and committed to eliminating our democratic way of life. What a sad place to reside. If some conservatives who dwell within this netherworld, manage to free themselves from their prisons, they might actually be able get work done for the American people.

Congratulations Mr. Sowell, for illustrating your ignorance, and reinforcing your identity as a rabid ideologue. You have proven yourself incapable of being taken seriously in debate.

Thank you to Andrew from the Dish for this: This would be amazingly appalling, if it weren’t from the maniacally duplicitous conscious of the conservative movement. It tells you everything you need to know about the man Limbaugh is.

Read what Limbaugh says during a recent show before a commercial break about the unemployed:

The unemployed are being treated as virtuous. They are being treated to further payments while not working, now up to three years. You’re seeing more and more Democrats come out and actually wage war on the rich; wage war on working people; wage war on creative people; wage war on the people that provide jobs; wage war on the productive people of this country. You see it now. It’s been a little bit more abstract, but now these guys lost the election, and the mask is off and you are seeing the genuine Marxists that they are, you’re seeing it, and you’re seeing the venom that’s attached to ‘em. I mean they look at what happened to Charlie Rangel as fair. You know, there’s an all-out war against productive self-reliant people in this country by the Democrat Party. That’s what you notice.

Now read what he says just after the break:

Ladies and gentlemen, if we were on the ball and if the Republicans were on the ball, the question being asked would be: Why are the Democrats trying to take away unemployment extensions here at Christmas? That’s how this ought to be framed. If we were on offense, that would be the question: Why are the Democrats trying to take away unemployment benefits here at Christmastime? That would put them on defense. That’s the question we should be asking.

(Emphasis is mine) What? Only the depraved vapid individual that is Limbaugh, could have concocted such contrived doublespeak. Bravo to the De Facto head of the conservative movement. If I were a conservative, I’d want my money back.

These clowns won’t pay for their obstinate, callous obstruction. Pity the toy makers, not the toys. Most folks have not held conservatives accountable for their non-action. I’m sure they’ll wake up when it’s too late.

As if this political climate weren’t vapid, poisonous, and divisive enough– here is the ghastly governor of Arizona Jan Brewer: absolutely wooden, bizarre, and visibly medicated– dodging a rather simple, pointed question by her democratic opponent for governor– regarding be-headings in the deserts of Arizona. Why would she not answer a simple question that she herself should know the answer to–It was the governor who brought this despicable behavior to light, by telling Fox news about the destructive behavior by illegal immigrants coming over the Mexican border.

This alleged criminal behavior was one of the reasons given for implementing SB1070, the new immigration law causing that is currently dividing Americans mainly along ideological lines. So when Brewer would not, or could give her answer, you knew she stepped in her own pile of dung. She had. Eventually, she had to explain herself:

“That was an error, if I said that,” the Republican told The Associated Press on Friday. “I misspoke, but you know, let me be clear, I am concerned about the border region because it continues to be reported in Mexico that there’s a lot of violence going on and we don’t want that going into Arizona.” She said she was referring to beheadings and other cartel-related violence in Mexico in comments she made earlier this summer about decapitated bodies found in the state’s southern region.

Brewer didn’t just misspeak: She wantonly and arrogantly fabricated a tremendously gruesome story, that has had untold consequences for her state, and the geniality of the immigration debate as a whole. The past two years have seemingly brought out the worst in American politicians. Trapping American voters in a fear vortex is now what passes as acceptable dissent. It is not. It is shameless and destructive. Brewer is so cavalierly ambivalent about her lies it’s despicable. And that is the problem here: Americans–politicians, writers, bloggers, are making up stories and running with them, because they face no consequences of fact.

Will this end the same way for governor Brewer? More than likely. We don’t punish bad behavior or corruption. We seem to tolerate it– unless it’s salacious and tawdry. Then, it’s celebrated.

When will politicians be held accountable for their irrationality and irresponsibility?
