WTF:

“In my opinion, any mandate coming from government is not a good thing, so obviously … there will be more the explanation coming from former governor, Romney, on his support for government mandates … Even on a state level and even a local level, mandates coming from a governing body, it’s tough for a lot of us independent Americans to accept, because we have great faith in the private sectors and our own families … and our own businessmen and women making decisions for ourselves. Not any level of government telling us what to do,” – Sarah Palin, tweaking Romney on the day he announced his candidacy.

This is one of the most succinct and thorough articles on the Sarah Palin-Trig Palin madness to date:

So what happens when a politician renders the easily verifiable unverifiable, as the Palins have done with Trig? Questions of believability arise, trust disintegrates and Sarah ends up right back in the mess she was in when she was Alaska’s governor. She quit that job because she didn’t like dealing with all the ethics complaints being filed against her. The ethics complaints started because her critics didn’t trust her. And if anyone remembers, the beginnings of that trace back to when the Palins tried to get former brother-in-law Mike Wooten fired from his job as an Alaska State Trooper, and then said they didn’t.

I highly encourage you to read the entire piece. It is well worth it. I could care less whose baby Trig is. But the fact remains that Palin’s disingenuous ramblings about trust and verify– and her equally poor choice in getting into the birther mud– reflect her untrustworthiness and hypocrisy. Don’t blame anyone doubting the baby’s parentage; blame yourself for not putting it to rest.

Barack Obama released his birth certificate. The problem in birther eyes is that it does not satisfy their requirement. Who cares? Their validation matters little. They don’t like him anyway– and they wouldn’t like him or any certificate he presented. That’s why their mission is immaterial and asinine. Palin need only show Trig’s birth certificate. Simple. Surely a run for president will only increase the pressure to do this.

Either way, there are more important issues on the table than either of these stories. It’s time for everyone to put them to rest.

Palin’s psedo-nemesis Joe McGinnis is back: National Enquirer out with a story about Todd’s “love child.” http://bit.ly/e1j9km I heard the story from a number of people last summer. Basic version is that it’s a boy now in his late teens and that the mother is an old flame of Todd’s from his hometown of Dillingham.
Palin’s psedo-nemesis Joe McGinnis is back:

National Enquirer out with a story about Todd’s “love child.” http://bit.ly/e1j9km

I heard the story from a number of people last summer. Basic version is that it’s a boy now in his late teens and that the mother is an old flame of Todd’s from his hometown of Dillingham. I haven’t yet been able to confirm this, but I won’t be delivering my final chapter until June.

The National Enquirer again? Their track has proven to be quite good as of late.

While it’s not as explosive as Trig-gate– as chronicled by the great Andrew Sullivan here, here, and here– it is still quite the story. While I don’t normally engage in speculative blogging, I can’t deny that this is a tad bit titillating. The irony here is this story–while already in circulation for a few months–is breaking as the former governor decided to dip her toes into the birther nonsense. It’s probably an attempt to reclaim the spotlight from Michele Bachmann, since that has generally been her modus operandi. I would think she would be the last person wanting to engage over a birth certificate. Then again, she isn’t that bright.

If this does in fact prove to be the case, I feel for her. But it also proves that you need to get your own house in order before you try attempt to straighten others.

“I think many people, millions of people, in this country are upset with the tenor and the attitude of our people. I think America has become very angry and people are upset about that. They don’t feel that our government is working together to solve problems, and the reason they feel that way is because they’re not. And people are very, very angry. There are people in the industry that you’re in who make a pretty good living off of keeping the public very angry. I think that there are a lot of political people that feel that it’s to their advantage to keep people angry at the government.”– Prima County sheriff Clarence Dupnik

Words matter.

Here are comments grabbed from Sarah Palin’s Facebook page yesterday, January 9th regarding the murders Saturday in Arizona–specifically Chris Taylor-Green. H/T to ObamaLondon:

Let me say this: I believe words are powerfiul. You can make someone feel wonderful with words. You can make somjeone feel the sting of pain and rejection. You can also make someone angry. Words are living, breathing mechanisms that can alter the emotional state. That point is indisuputable.

With that said, let’s not play games of pass the buck here. Sarah Palin and her ilk did not advocate for the death of Representative Gabby Giffords. But their use of words and imagery–intentional or not–have caused a super-heated climate of anger and mistrust. Why would she tolerate that kind of talk on her Facebook page? Why not simply scrub them away, just as she does with comments perceived as negative toward her?

It would be advisable–in my opinion–if the former governor recognizes this point. Real leaders recognize their strengths and weaknesses. By championing the cause of calm– and recognizing her error in judgement for her use of gun sight imagery and language– she would establish a stronger leadership presence, and I’d wager she’d gain substantial respect.

It starts by being responsible. It starts by recognizing your role in the degradation of American discourse.

I haven’t watched Sarah Palin’s new show, but I don’t need to to know it revolves around her, and her sacrosanct universe–devoid of the reality of truth. Don’t misunderstand: this is fine for a celebrity diva. Not so much for the prospective leader of the free world.

It’s safe for Palin to surround herself in her protective cocoon, where she has no fear of reprisal, and her dubious ramblings are free from criticism. Rove only speaks truthfully here.

It’s remarkable that people who invoke the Founders so regularly and in such tones of devotion could be utterly deaf to the Founders’ concern to ensure freedom for mistrusted minority religions. They might start by reading George Washington’s once-famous letter to the Newport synagogue, paying special attention to this sentence: “It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent national gifts.” In Washington’s understanding, it is misbegotten even to ask the question, “Should we tolerate this?” …

A little background first: Settlers to this wondrous new land arrived at her shores teeming with possibilities, and brimming with hope of a new life–without the scourge of religious persecution. Early settlers, or pilgrims, were Protestant Christians who fled England because of the monarchy–and religious indifference. They landed in search of freedom, and the right to practice their faith indiscriminately. In the 21st century, America conservatism has effectively vilified religious and cultural difference–offering its own brand of religious persecution.

Above all else, we are a nation predicated on the freedom of religious expression. We are allowed to practice our faith in this country–whatever that faith may be–so long as it does not violate any laws. It was because of Protestant migration freedom of religion was included in the constitution. The very document conservatives seem to rise and sleep with.

How do conservative Christians reconcile their ignorance with their faith here? Surely tolerance and love– and a clear fundamental understanding of this nation’s founding document might elucidate matters more effectively. What’s taking place now in conversations and debates on this matter far outstrips logic and reasonable disagreeance. There is a poison strain of conservatism–more modern yet wholly archaic in its application–that seeks to engage in fear baiting, and presupposes an unnatural level of culturally superiority. It has nothing to do with real Christianity. How Christian is it to deny those of other faiths a place to worship and fellowship with their fellow man? How does their God give them the power to ridicule and spit and curse those who simply need and want the space to be one with their higher source?

A funny dynamic is at play here. Most conservatives consider black Americans blithe victims of identity politics–both by their own hand–and by the hands of their liberal benefactors. Conservatives have no desire to fruitfully discuss matters of race–at least those matters that deal with suspected white oppression and discrimination.

It’s always assumed that blacks, for the most part, hide behind their race in order to avoid perceived real issues affecting black communities. If that is the case, how much different is this new style conservatism Gingrich, Palin, et al. are advocating? This fear mongering is just another example of identity politics, where conservatives feel America is under assault by undesirables whose patriotic cred pales next to their own. How often have we heard the take America back mantra? Too often. How long is the exploitation of culture issues going to be accepted? Why is it tolerable to demonize minority culture and religion and not mainstream society– where most malfeasance is not only practiced, but encouraged?
