Actor Monica Belucci once said, “When people divorce, it’s always such a tragedy. At the same time, if people stay together it can be even worse.” While no couple intends to dissolve a marriage, in some cases, divorce is necessary. But why do people, who were once so in love, decide to break up a union?
Why Couples Want Out
According to a survey, most couples ask for a divorce because their partners failed to work harder at maintaining the marriage. Lack of commitment holds the top spot as the most compelling reason people seek the legal representation of a divorce lawyer. Only 29% listed abuse as a cause for wanting to get out of a marriage.
1. Lack of Commitment
Of those surveyed, 73% cited lack of commitment as ruining a marriage. Meanwhile, 62% wished they tried harder to stay married. But researchers find that while a high level of commitment can mean staying married, it doesn’t mean being happy in the relationship.
2. Too Much Arguing
Conflicts that escalate to fights can lead couples to ask for a divorce. Fifty-six percent named this the reason for damaging the marriage.
Surprisingly, only 55% cited extra-marital affairs as a reason for wanting out of a marriage. Clearly, some room for hope exists for couples who have gone through the devastation of infidelity. The Infidelity Statistics reveals that 31% of marriages last after the discovery or admission of an affair, and that the average length of an affair spans two years.
Couples also cited marrying too young, unrealistic expectations, lack of equality in relationships, and lack of preparation for marriage for getting a divorce.
Marriage is not easy. It takes commitment, respect, and a shared goal to take the relationship in the same direction. But a bad marriage is never a good life for anyone, especially when you have kids. Instead of forcing a situation that isn’t going to work out, make a decision as a couple. And seek legal representation.
